Amanda Calhoun, MD, MPH is a third-year Adult/Child Psychiatry Resident at Yale School of Medicine, where she serves as co-president of the Psychiatry Residents’ Association.  Dr. Calhoun is also the assistant editor of the Connecticut Psychiatric Society Newsletter and an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry Residents’ Journal.  Dr. Calhoun seeks to expose and eradicate racism in the medical system using a direct and heartfelt approach.  Dr. Calhoun’s anti-racism work spans from writing anti-racism curriculum, standing up for her patients in real-time, public speaking, research, and writing.  She believes that all doctors should be activists, and that social justice should be integrated with medical education.

Dr. Calhoun works full-time as a medical resident, but she is available to consult on a variety of projects, including anti-racism education and curricula development, keynotes and presentations, podcasts, roundtables, and panels.

Black Girls Self-Image Study

A mixed methods, multi-phasic study with the aim of creating a culturally sensitive tool for assessing the self-image of Black girls.

 

Qualitative analysis of the work of Jane Elliott

The Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes exercise, conducted by Jane Elliott was never documented in academic research nor was a study similar to it ever replicated.  This study will look into the qualitative analysis of Elliott’s past work and a current interview, with the intent of replicating her work.

Nursing Trainee Interactions

A multi-site study that aims to assess how nursing interactions affect the training experience of medical residents, and whether these interactive experiences differ by race.

 

Qualitative Study of race relations in an inpatient psychiatry unit

This study aims to ascertain the role of race relations in an inpatient psychiatric unit, with the intent of developing interventions to rectify issues.

 

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion perspectives of psychiatry trainees

A qualitative study looking to assess the perspectives of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the training of child psychiatry trainees.
